Data Scientist for Electronic Health Record Modernization

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is committed to providing seamless care for Veterans, including access to a complete electronic health record (EHR) and shared, transparent care pathways with the Department of Defense (DoD) and community providers.  In order to ensure seamless care for Veterans, VA will move toward a single common system by adopting the electronic health record (EHR) system that is being deployed by DoD, which at its core consists of Cerner Millennium.   Currently the VA is undertaking an enterprise-wide Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) effort through the procurement of the Cerner commercial electronic health record software and related support services. This modernization of VA’s health information management systems will result in a common, single, lifetime health record that both DoD and VA can access, with anticipated improvements in patient care and safety.

ERPi is providing a range of program management, administrative, and technical support activities to the VA’s EHRM Program Executive Office (PEO) in support of this transformative and high-profile enterprise-wide effort. The scope of this program includes PMO support of the EHRM, including the maintenance, enhancement and decommissioning of supporting legacy health systems and support for all projects and programs required for the success of the EHRM.
In this vital VA EHR transformation, we are seeking a Data Scientist I to support the business process development and improvements. The candidate must possess knowledge of appropriate data sources to address the specific requirements of projects for monitoring, characterization, analysis and modeling. Performs scientific research, scientific writing and editing, including the writing and editing of project products to established government standards for the targeted science and lay audiences, proofreading of draft and final documents.

Role Description:
This position supports VA’s EHR Modernization effort and related health systems. Specifically, it supports the project aligned to support VA’s Laboratory redesign and modernization. VA EHR systems are custom developed systems which leverage Mumps (M-Code), Intersystems Cache tools.
This position will provide development, engineering and solution support for EHRM and assigned EHRM product/projects where development outside of the commercial product is required for the EHRM solution. Provide functional analysis to identify, review, and document product/project functional and technical requirements. The candidate shall capture discrete aspects of functionality for integration in systems, applications, and tools to be applied in day-to-day EHRM operations. VA has made the enterprise decision to move to Cerner Millennium. Familiarity with the following is preferred:
  • VA VistA or similar EHR systems (e.g. IHS RPMS)
  • Commercial Health IT software, in particular Cerner Millennium
  • VA and DoD organizations, as it relates to Interagency health space
  • Understanding of Health IT systems and processes
  • Functional knowledge of Laboratory processes and software
Required Skills and Experience:
  • BA/BS degree;
  • 4 years of experience with creating and updating data architectures; 
  • Experience with electronic health records requirements documentation, configuration, and implementation.

    • M Programming
    • Fileman
    • VistA file structure, including VistA Lab and Blood Bank
